Alegent Health includes seven acute-care hospitals designed to regional specifications. When Alegent acquired them, its challenge was unifying them under its brand. Since 2000, we designed the new 200,000-SF, full-service Lakeside Hospital. We also handled: Bergan Mercy Medical Center's renovation and expansion, including a first phase scope of 210,000 SF; Immanuel Medical Center's renovation and addition of 90,000 SF; and Midlands Community Hospital's major renovation and 50,000 SF of new space.

Alegent requested identifiable main public entrances with separate staff access; creation of healing environments using non-institutional spaces with views and daylight; and creation of wayfinding using exterior landmarks and clear orientation by intuitive paths and common signage.

Other criteria included: development of consolidated care areas to house diagnostic centers; surgery/procedure/prep and recovery areas; separating public and patient traffic and logical site traffic flow; and bringing services to patients using grouped admission centers and bedside check-in. Underlying these challenges was the mandate to decrease variations between facilities and install system-wide qualities that emphasize compatible images to all four hospitals.
